What is a VPN, and do you need one?

A plain-English guide to how VPNs work, what they protect you from — and what they don't.

What a VPN is

A VPN — virtual private network — creates an encrypted connection between your device and a server run by the VPN provider. Everything you do online travels through that private tunnel before reaching the wider internet.

The result: people on your network can't read your traffic, and the websites you visit see the VPN server's IP address instead of yours.

How it works

Toggle the diagram to see the difference.

01 Your device Data is encrypted by SecureTap before it leaves.
02 Wi-Fi / ISP Sees only scrambled data going to SecureTap.
03 SecureTap server Decrypts and forwards — keeps no logs.
04 Website Sees the server’s IP, not yours.
Protected: your traffic is encrypted end to end on the network, and websites see a SecureTap IP.

Why people use one

01Safer public Wi-FiEncryption stops others on the same network from reading your traffic.
02More privacy from your ISPYour provider sees that you’re connected to a VPN, not which sites you visit.
03Travel and remote workKeep using services from home and protect work logins on shared networks.
04Getting past network blocksProtocols like Stealth help on networks that restrict certain apps or VPNs.

What a VPN doesn't do

A VPN is one layer of protection, not all of it. It won't stop you from downloading malware, stop phishing emails, or make you anonymous to sites you're signed in to. Keep your apps updated and use strong, unique passwords alongside it.

How to choose a VPN

CHECKLIST
✓A clear no-logs policy — in plain language you can actually read.
✓Modern protocols — WireGuard, IKEv2 and a stealth option for restricted networks.
✓Kill Switch & leak protection — so nothing slips out if the connection drops.
✓Apps for all your devices — and enough device slots for your household.
✓A free trial — so you can test speed before you pay.
